This Scholarship was established to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students or students from isolated rural communities to undertake study in the School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at UNSW. Preference may be given to Indigenous students.
Polaris Software Pty Limited will generously provide $2,000 per year for each recipient, for the duration of their program, provided that satisfactory progress in their studies is maintained. One scholarship will be awarded each year, subject to finding a suitable applicant, normally payable in two equal halves.
To be eligible for a Scholarship, an applicant must be:
- an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or
- have lived in an isolated rural community in the previous year and
- be proposing to undertake full-time study in an undergraduate program in the School of Computer Science and Engineering at UNSW. These programs include:
- Bioinformatics Engineering
- Computer Engineering
- Computer Science
- Software Engineering
- Programs combined with any of the above Programs
In addition, applicants must have undertaken the HSC (or equivalent) in the year prior to commencing study at UNSW, or meet the requirements of the AEP Admission Scheme for an undergraduate program at the School of Computer Science and Engineering.
In addition to completing the standard UNSW Scholarship form, available at http://www.scholarships.unsw.edu.au, applicants should attach a statement addressing the following criteria, and/or attach relevant documentation:
- indigenous or remote rural status
- academic merit
- reasons for undertaking the current and/or proposed study of Computing
- any consideration of financial need
- any consideration of social/economic circumstances which might otherwise hinder successful transition to UNSW
- personal qualities including leadership and potential to contribute to the wider life of the University
It is anticipated that the successful applicant will act as a role mode and reach out to secondary school students of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent or students from isolated rural communities to motivate them to undertake tertiary studies in computing.
The Scholarship recipient should not normally hold any other Scholarship or Award (except for Youth Allowance/ Abstudy/Austudy) except with the permission of the UNSW Scholarships, Loans and Research Students Office.
